Flowing through the center of Washington County, the Machias River offers a true backwoods Maine experience through remote boating, fishing, and camping opportunities. The river harbors one of the most productive Atlantic salmon fisheries in the United States and has critical habitat for bald eagles, migratory songbirds, and other resident wildlife. The Land for Maine’s Future Board supported the conservation of 20,807 acres surrounding the river in 2003 and 2006.
